GENERAL TSO POTSTICKERS

Traditional General Tso Chicken is made with chicken chunks that are breaded, fried, and covered in a sweet and spicy sauce. My version with chicken potstickers packs a ton of flavor, has some non-traditional ingredients, and, honestly, we like this recipe more than classic General Tso.

WHAT IS GENERAL TSO CHICKEN?

General Tso’s chicken is a deep-fried, sweet, and spicy chicken dish that’s offered in North American Chinese restaurants.

WHAT IS GENERAL TSO SAUCE MADE OF?

Classic General Tso Sauce is made of rice vinegar, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, water, sugar, and corn starch. I substituted beef broth instead of water for more flavor. As well, I added ginger and a pinch of red pepper. Instead of brown sugar or granulated white sugar, I opted for healthier coconut sugar.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO MAKE GENERAL TSO POTSTICKERS

It looks like a long list of ingredients, but this recipe really isn’t difficult. It’s a little time-consuming stuffing and folding the potstickers, but while they’re cooking the sauce is easy to stir together and it all goes in at once.

  • Ground chicken. You can also use ground turkey or pork.
  • Garlic. I prefer fresh garlic.
  • Onion. I recommend a white or yellow onion for this recipe.
  • Quinoa. I added cooked quinoa for protein and nutrients and to lighten the potstickers. You can omit it or substitute cooked, riced cauliflower.
  • Soy Sauce. I recommend low-sodium soy.
  • Black Pepper.
  • Wonton Wrappers. Get the small 4-inch wonton wrappers. You can also use round dumpling wrappers.
  • Broccoli. I used 2 cups of broccoli florets so they would cook faster.
  • Beef Broth. You can sub chicken or vegetable stock.
  • Rice Vinegar. There’s not a good substitution for this.
  • Coconut sugar. You may want to use white granulated sugar or brown sugar.
  • Ginger. Fresh, grated ginger. I don’t recommend ground ginger.
  • Cayenne pepper. Omit if heat isn’t your thing.
  • Cornstarch. Cornstarch thickens the sauce. It tastes the same without it if you want to omit it.
