Does the quality of a phono preamp make a difference? ›

The shortest answer is yes. In general, because the process of RIAA equalization works to balance the bass and treble for a more balanced listening experience, a phono stage improves the sound quality.

Higher-end phono preamps, according to Randall, are “also capable of accurately amplifying a wider range of cartridges.” In particular, they can more adeptly handle rarer Moving Coil (MC) cartridges, which require much more gain and have different electrical requirements than their more common Moving Magnet brethren.

You can also use a standalone pre-amplifier to improve the sound quality of any turntable as a standalone amp is going to better quality than anything built-in! This device connects between your turntable and your amplifier or powered speakers.

This preamp is highly recommended, and not just for Fluance turntables. It delivered on all its promises. Well worth the money! This preamp works well with my Fluance RT 85 turntable (great turntable by the way).

Gain: The gain for most high output moving coils is between 1.5mV and 3mV. Most high output moving coils should be set at the 50dB gain level. Although, if this does not produce enough volume in your system, you can bump it up to 55dB.

A high quality microphone preamp, however, will do much more than just make your mic level louder. It will deliver a cleaner, more accurate signal, with higher gain, lower noise, less distortion, and more headroom.

Choose your phono preamp according to the sound quality required. In the context of analog preamps, the term “phono stage” is interchangeable with phono preamp. But in the larger context of music and sound, the term preamp can apply to microphone preamps, analog sensors, and other uses.

Do modern turntables need a preamp? ›

MOST new turntables have a preamp built-in, SO DON'T STRESS ABOUT THE PREAMP. Preamps are generally required for some vintage turntables and higher-priced, intermediate + high-end turntables.

On its own, a turntable produces a phono level signal. In other words, the volume of the audio signal is very low. A phono preamp will amplify the signal to a line level signal.

Cartridge compatibility: Make sure to choose a preamp that is compatible with the type of phono cartridge that you are using. There are two main types of phono cartridges: moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC). MC cartridges require a preamp with a higher gain setting than MM cartridges.
